Basotho Culture 101…

Just thought I would let you in on just a few things our Basotho friends have told us in the past couple of weeks about what they believe…

1.  The Basotho bathe in the morning, because if you bathe at night, you will throw the water out, and if you throw the water out, the witches will come by and have something with which they can ”witch you.”

2.  You must not leave your clothes hanging out on the line overnight.  If you do, the witches will come by and spray something on your clothes, and everybody will hate you.

3.  When you are sleeping, you must keep your head completely covered with your blanket.  If you do not, the witches will come into your house and stroke your face.

4.  When your crops are growing, you must pay the sangoma for a special stick to put in your fields to protect your crops from hail.

This ‘Me has made a profession of faith to follow Jesus.  She no longer wears the “charm” bottle around her neck, and she is very faithful at our Tuesday Bible study.

What makes them begin to question their traditional beliefs?  I have asked myself that question many, many times.  My best answer?

“How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed?  How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard?  And how will they hear without a preacher?”…”So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”  Romans 10: 14 & 17

Please continue to pray that the eyes and ears of the Basotho will be opened by the Spirit as we minister here in the mountains.

Until ALL have heard, Jim
